Job Description

Background and Organizational Context

Under its new Country Programme (2023-2027), UNDP in Nepal focuses on developing the capacity of government agencies, civil society, and community groups to pursue sustainable and inclusive economic transformation, enhance people’s participation in governance, and protect and promote biodiversity. The new Country Programme is an opportunity for UNDP Nepal to strategically contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and expand collaboration with national and international partners.

Position Purpose:

The Communications Analyst, under the Deputy Resident Representative’s guidance, implements the corporate communications strategy and contributes to the design, management, and implementation of the Country Office communications and publication strategies. The role aims to influence the development agenda, enhance public and media outreach, and mobilize support for UNDP.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

  1. Planning and Design of Communication Strategies:
    • Conduct communications need assessments for the Country Office.
    • Draft/edit the communications and outreach strategy based on the corporate strategy.
    • Integrate advocacy and communication strategies into all aspects of UNDP’s development program.
  2. Implementation of Publication Strategy:
    • Implement the CO publications strategy based on the corporate policy.
    • Identify storylines for publications and draft substantive articles.
    • Coordinate and manage CO publication activities, including content management and dissemination.
  3. Web and Social Media Management:
    • Supervise the design and maintenance of the UNDP website and social media platforms.
    • Update information regularly, ensuring a dynamic online presence.
    • Prepare content for websites and social media platforms to maintain consistency.
  4. Business Development and Partnerships:
    • Support launch campaigns and public information campaigns on UNDP activities.
    • Promote and disseminate advocacy materials for flagship initiatives and publications.
    • Package and submit program initiatives for donor review.
  5. Facilitation of Knowledge Building and Management:
    • Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned.
    • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice.
    • Provide training and advice on internal and external communications for development.
  6. Contribution towards Gender Equality and Social Inclusion:
    • Ensure all knowledge products are gender and social inclusion-sensitive.
    • Produce communication materials following a gender and social inclusion perspective.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree (2 years of experience) or Bachelor’s degree (4 years of experience) in social sciences, media relations, journalism, or a relevant subject.
  • Minimum of 2 years (Master’s degree) or 4 years (Bachelor’s degree) of relevant experience in journalism or communication for development.
  • Experience in working with or for development organizations.
  • Proficiency in computers, office software packages, and web-based management systems.
  • International experience in communication for development or journalism is an asset.
  • Fluency in English and Nepali is required.
