Position Overview
We are in search of a highly accomplished Hydrogeologist with substantial expertise in the field of hydrogeology. This Hydrogeologist will be pivotal in our efforts related to ‘intervention on regenerating and managing springsheds for multiple social and ecosystem benefits in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH),’ which is part of Action Area D: Restoring and Regenerating Landscapes within Strategic Group 2: Shaping Green and Resilient Mountain Economies.
The chosen candidate will hold a critical role in enhancing ICIMOD’s springshed management approach by amalgamating scientific methodologies with socio-economic considerations. They will also collaborate with ICIMOD’s partners to provide hydrogeological assessments, ensuring effective springshed management in the HKH region. This position presents a unique opportunity to make a substantial contribution to environmental conservation in the HKH region.
Responsibilities
The Hydrogeologist will be responsible for achieving outcomes aligned with our commitments in Strategy 2030: Moving Mountains and Medium-Term Action Plan V (2023-2026): Embracing Change and Accelerating Impact:
- Plan and execute fieldwork and support partner-led pilots, focusing on hydrogeological mapping, conceptual layout development, and recharge area identification.
- Ensure compliance of action research and pilots with springshed management protocols, proposals, and ethical processes.
- Perform spring-related data analysis, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations for further customization and implementation of gender and socially inclusive springshed management approaches.
- Plan and facilitate capacity-building sessions on fundamental concepts of hydrogeological cycling and hydrogeological assessments for stakeholders at various levels.
- Identify field stakeholders, engage in dialogues with partners, and discern needs for quality implementation and scaling of springshed management.
- Contribute to the development of proposals and frameworks related to springshed management as a Nature-based Solution (NbS) for water security and resilience building.
- Produce joint research reports and publications from pilot work with partners and ensure their effective dissemination.
- Contribute to reporting and ensure the delivery of high-quality content reports from partners related to their assigned tasks.
- Network with regional and international organizations, participate in professional bodies, and represent ICIMOD at external events pertaining to springshed management.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- A master’s degree in hydrology, hydrogeology, or related subjects, with three years of relevant work experience. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
- Proficiency in hydrogeological assessments of springsheds using field-based and digital methods.
- Knowledge of collaborative and gender- and socially-inclusive pilots and scaling up solutions.
- Experience in developing training courses related to springshed management or a related field.
- Willingness to undertake field missions with other team members in the remote regional HKH.
- Ability to adapt to new work situations and changes.
- Strong English communication and report writing skills (in English and Nepali) and analytical skills with an ability to understand and contextualize research.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred
- A strong orientation towards interdisciplinary approaches.
- Experience in the HKH region or another mountainous region.
- Experience in the application of digital tools for springshed management.
Reporting and Supervision
The Hydrogeologist will report to the Intervention Manager – Sustainable Springs within Action Area D: Restoring and Regenerating Landscapes and will operate under the overall supervision of the Action Area Coordinator. Close collaboration with other interventions in Action Area D focusing on springshed management is expected.
Location
You will work in a cross-cultural, impact-focused environment at ICIMOD’s headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. Frequent travel within the HKH region will be necessary. Kathmandu offers a vibrant and exciting living environment with friendly people, affordable living costs, a variety of delicious local and international cuisines, good local and international schools, and a low crime rate. Nepal also provides fantastic trekking trails, white-water rafting, safaris, and a rich cultural scene.
Duration
The initial contract is for three years, with a probationary period of six months. Extension possibilities are subject to performance and ICIMOD’s future funding levels.
Remuneration
This is an international position at ICIMOD. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and ICIMOD offers competitive salaries and benefits. The benefits package includes a provident fund, health insurance, severance pay, children’s education grant, and paid leave (30 holidays and 10 public holidays per year). For expatriates, there is a tax exemption in Nepal, and they are responsible for their home country’s tax payments. Expatriate staff are entitled to a housing allowance, annual home leave ticket, shipment of personal effects, and an installation and removal allowance.
