Core Function:
Habitat for Humanity International Nepal recognizes the disproportionate impact of climate change, including climate-induced disaster on the vulnerable populations we serve. Our unwavering commitment is to combat this impact through innovative climate-smart housing solutions, ensuring that everyone, including marginalized communities affected by climate-induced disasters, has access to safe and sustainable housing. In line with this, we are looking for an incumbent who is competent and committed to take the key responsibilities to provide strategic leadership to Habitat Nepal’s disaster risk reduction, response, and climate change adaptation and mitigation in Habitat Nepal’s East Office. He/she is responsible for ensuring the implementation of on-going work on disaster risk reduction and establish mechanisms for climate smart housing solutions. The incumbent will report to the Head of Field Operations, East Office for administrative considerations while concurrently reporting to the Program Director for matters pertaining to functional and technical aspects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the implementation of the SMART Housing Project in Dhanusha District of Madhesh Province.
  • Provide support on the implementation of the Home Equals campaign project particularly in Dhanusha, and in other districts when required.
  • Conduct risk analysis for climate-induced disasters and provide support for climate-smart housing solutions considering multi-hazard and multi-sectorial perspectives across all our areas of work.
  • Provide technical support for identifying areas where disaster-resilient and climate-smart housing solutions can be integrated while designing and implementing projects.
  • Build strong networks and partnerships with local governments, consortium partners, implementing partners, organizations working on disability and social inclusion, youth-led organizations, and other stakeholders to drive climate actions towards disaster risk reduction and climate justice.
  • Coordinate with local and provincial governments in Madhesh to support them in taking policy and programmatic actions for disaster risk reduction and management and for climate justice.
  • Generate evidence for initiating approaches for carbon calculations in pilot houses, supporting our commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.
  • Build the capacity of partners on inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Actions.
  • Contribute to and support policy dialogues and discussions with related stakeholders, such as Local and District Disaster Management Committees, local governments, civil society networks, and the communities affected by disasters and climate change.
  • Coordinate with relevant working groups, clusters, and networks to ensure that the DRR and Climate Actions initiatives align with government policies and priorities.
  • Generate and utilize evidence to address the wider replication of climate-smart housing solutions as an initiative of Habitat Nepal towards shifting to a green, resilient, and inclusive development (GRID) path.

Education Qualification and Professional Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in related field with 3+ years of relevant experience in Disaster Risk Reduction and Response, Climate Change, land and housing rights
  • Direct experience of working in a non-profit organization and ideally, 2-3 years of experience working for a youth led organization.
  • Experience in the development of Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation plan.
  • Demonstrated track record in working with relevant government bodies and stakeholders for climate actions and disaster risk reduction.
  • Demonstrated planning, project management and facilitation skills.

Knowledge and Competencies

  • Willingness and ability to work closely with other departments, institutions, and across cultures.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and produce high quality results.
  • Knowledge of national and international policies on climate actions, disaster risk reduction, housing and land rights and other relevant policies
  • Knowledge of current trends on climate smart housing solutions and climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives and innovative approaches
  • Excellent research and analysis, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-driven.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills; innovative and creative thinker.
