Describe the author’s impression of five towers of Angkor in comparison to the other temples. (An Eastern Journey) Answer: In An Eastern Journey, the essayist William Somerset Maugham is deeply impressed by the five towers of Angkor Wat. He thinks these towers are more beautiful and meaningful than the towers of any other temple he has seen. They are tall, strong, and wonderfully made. The towers rise high into the sky and show the great skills of the people who built them. The essayist finds it very hard to describe their beauty because of their rich decoration and grand design. He says no words or writing style can truly show how beautiful the towers are. Even the best writing can only give a weak and unclear picture of their beauty. Compared to other temples, the five towers of Angkor Wat are more perfect, balanced, and attractive. The writer feels a special connection with them. He believes these towers are the most impressive and unforgettable part of his journey to the East.

The sheep is seen as innocent and pure, unlike people who have to deal with problems and sins. The poem also criticizes society for its flaws, like greed, dishonesty, and religious hypocrisy. Devkota points out that humans are often selfish and focused on material things, creating division and conflict. In contrast, the sheep lives a life of peace and simplicity, free from these problems. The poem suggests that a simple, innocent life might be better than the complicated and dishonest life humans live.
  2. Do you think the characters in the play ‘All My Sons’ are represented to relate the connection between war and money? Give reasons to support your view. Answer: Yes, the characters in All My Sons help us understand the connection between war and money. Joe Keller, the father, owns a factory that makes airplane parts during the war. To earn more money and save his business, he sends damaged parts to the army. This causes the death of 21 pilots. Joe does this to protect his business and earn profit, even though he knows it is wrong. His actions show how some people use war as a chance to make money, even if it hurts others. Chris, Joe’s son, believes that people who fight in the war are honest and make big sacrifices. He is shocked when he finds out his father was responsible for the pilots’ deaths. Chris feels that money should not be more important than human life. The play shows a clear conflict between business and morality. Through the characters, we see how war can lead to greed and wrong choices when people care more about money than doing the right thing.
